[ OPEN/CATCH-ALL ] the crickets still sing in october.
WHO: dextera! and others!
WHERE: all around town, in a variety of places!
WHEN: october!
WHAT: an open prompt for quest 29’s skeletons (eating them), and whatever else comes up!
WARNINGS: he’s eating bones.
i. NO BONES ABOUT IT (OPEN)
[ dextera used to have a pretty healthy habit for eating bones—it used to be his thing, in fact, but lately he hasn’t had as much of a reason to eat them with all the color popping back up around town. they still provide some nutritional value to him, though, considering the way his body works, and what better to start hoarding for winter than by disassembling skeletons and biting right through their brittle bodies?
throughout the month, catch him doing this exact thing. sometimes he defeats the skeletons before chomping them, and sometimes he just rips the arm off one with his teeth like a dog. the latter, however, he’s only doing if he thinks no one is watching. ]
ii, but new. SEXY NUN COSTUME (~10/17 - 10/19)

ii, but new. SEXY NUN COSTUME (~10/17 - 10/19)
[ dextera got this costume from carving a pumpkin, and it’s probably going to stay on him for a solid three days. he can’t hide in his house for the whole time, especially once the harvest festival starts up, but he also doesn’t want to be seen in it—so of course, people have to see him in it, because that’s the way rp works.
whenever he does have to leave his house, he tries to wear a coat, but the unfortunate reality of this outfit is that still leaves his habit, the jewelry, the socks, and the heels to see from practically any angle. a more discerning eye will definitely see upon looking at him from the front that he’s wearing a dress that was definitely meant for someone with breasts. he’s wobbly walking around in the first place, and it’s only by the grace of god that the few times he trips, the back of his coat is long enough to keep from flashing his ass to the world.
let him die! ]

[ he's quick to turn around and make sure Dextera isn't laying dead on the ground, first of all - although certainly not as quick as he could have been. The guilt for not being able to catch that crystal was threatening to swallow him alive for the two seconds he thought Dextera was gone. But he isn't gone; he's standing there, and seems fine.
Well. That's good? Lupin's still pale. ]
That's what I want to know. What did you just do?

…
[ ah. ]
That crystal represented “me” from before I came here. It contained memories of my past. I’ve been thinking… since we spoke. That’s all.
no subject
Wait. You threw out your old memories?
[ there's the obvious question of "how did you turn your memories into a crystal," but Lupin honestly can't be bothered to question every strange thing he sees here anymore. The through line between their last conversation and this incident is obvious. Certainly, he'd told them to let go of the past... but he couldn't have possibly expected them to take it so literally.

[ what lupin doesn’t know is that he has another crystal, from the time that he died here in chroma, but that’s a different self, laden with different memories. the one that now belongs to the well is—was—his self completely unmarked by anything that happened in this town.
he doesn’t want to go back to being that person. ]
I’m sorry. I scared you.

It's -- fine. Just explain a little bit beforehand next time. [ Maybe he hadn't said anything because he knew Lupin might not approve? That would make Dex more canny than he'd thought. ] ... I hope you thought long and hard about that before you did it.
[ it seems foolish to admonish him for it when Lupin still doesn't know his circumstances in detail, and doubly so when there's nothing he can do to get them back now. Still, it doesn't sit well with him. It's true that it's important to move on from the past. But that doesn't mean forgetting it. Remembering mistakes made helps you avoid them in the future - and holding onto the pain from those mistakes keeps the people who suffered from them from fading away. That's what Lupin believes, at least. ]

[ dextera nods.
it was impulsive in the sense that if he thinks about anything for too long he’ll inevitably talk himself out of it, but this was as close to “resolve” as he could have come without pushing himself to inaction. ]
I wanted to. [ no, that’s not right. ] I needed to.
[ he turns, looking back down into the well, frowning into the darkness. it’s too deep for even the light overhead to catch on the water at the bottom. ]

Even if he doesn't approve of literally throwing away memories, he can recognize the symbolism behind the action, and he can approve of that. ]
Sounds like you did it, then - figured out what was right for you.

Thank you for talking with me before.
[ it helped him discover himself, after all. ]
And… for witnessing me, here.

[ Lupin has to smile at that, though it's small. He remains confused about how the crystal works, and just how Dextera was able to create an object like that - a power of his own, or perhaps the borrowed power of someone else in town? More than anything, he still doesn't think it was the right thing to do, exactly. But that's only "not right" for Lupin. Maybe for Dextera, it was right - just like he said. ]
I know you didn't want to share all that with me before, but if me seeing it and talking about it with you could help, then I'll call it a happy accident. [ a beat; his smile turns into something a little lighter and friendlier. ] You're a good guy, Dex. Don't be a stranger, all right? You're a friend of the gentleman thief - if you have more worries you want me to steal away, then feel free to call on me anytime.

thus, lupin. ]
I’ll tell Leliel to forgive you so you can come over.

Is she still angry? Women's hearts are fickle things... I'll have to find a good treat to win her back over.
[ dex must be feeling better if he can joke about that, so Lupin does, too. ]
