WHO: Minato and youuuu
WHERE: The town, the woods, everywhere in between
WHEN: June 3 - June 10
WHAT: Lack of sleep does some unfortunate things to people, it really does. ie punishments really, really suck
WARNINGS: A lot of this is just very, very dumb
June 3/4
[At first, he's just miserable. A night or two without sleep is doable, but really, really awful, and so Minato can be found mostly wandering, restless, especially late at night. Which is very, very unusual for him (usually he'd be asleep by now), but don't mind him as he stalks about the town with his hands shoved deeply into his pockets, occasionally stopping to yawn massively and lean against a wall.
He always ends up standing back up pretty promptly, though, no matter how sleepy he looks.
Weird.
Or he might come visit at some obscene hour of the morning if he thinks your character will be awake, almost desperate to talk to someone to get his mind off of this. He will definitely knock on doors at all hours of the night if he thinks your character would sincerely be awake at that time of night.
Please help him.]
June 5/6
[It gets much, much worse. Minato's wanderings are almost desperate now; lying down does nothing, leaning against things does nothing, he cannot sleep no matter what he does and it's starting to take its toll. He's definitely stumbling, staggering occasionally as if drunk, and if you try to stop him he may not even process that you're calling out to him.
Hm.
Worrisome.
It probably comes to a worrisome head when he's crossing one of the bridges in Bluo, feet dragging--and then sways, and topples right off the side, blacking out for a brief moment. Bye, Minato.]
June 8
[At this point he probably shouldn't be outside but he's here anyway, and he seems to be...talking to a tree? He's trying, but he clearly thinks it's someone he knows, and while his voice is low and slurred, he is trying to legitimately have a conversation with this tree.
It's probably a good thing he stopped to talk to the tree instead of wandering into the woods in this state? Maybe you should call out to him...
But he's definitely hallucinating, and only seems to notice if he's not interrupted when he stumbles, and knocks his head against said tree, startling back to himself abruptly with both hands clasped to his forehead.
And then he thumps his forehead against the tree again, this time purposefully and with plain aggravation.]

[ and for that reason, he's instantly concerned - that, and the fact that Minato's stare is somewhat more blank than usual. ]
Don't worry about me. Are you okay?
[ he'll worry about his hammer pants later ]
no subject
Yes...?
[He doesn't sound very sure, but he's at least quick to follow it up with:]
I'm just sleepy. Nothing's wrong... [Mostly.] Sorry--I didn't realize it was so late. I should... [...a yawn, jaw-crackingly large.] ... go.
no subject
Hold on. Are you saying you sleepwalked all the way here?
[ this is also concerning... ]
no subject
Minato just blinks blearily--and then huffs out a rueful breath.]
I wish... [That's just a mutter, though, and:]
No. I've been awake. [...A wave of his hand.] Maybe a little too long...? But I can't sleep, so...
no subject
... Have you not slept at all this entire week, Minato?
[ that... is bad... and he's definitely not going to just let him wander home on his own like this, which means he better start preparing himself for a little humiliation. ]
no subject
... Mm, no...
[Sleepily he just confirms that.]
I haven't been able to fall asleep, so I guess I was trying to distract myself...? [By wandering like a ghost.]
no subject
If you're looking for distractions, I can talk with you for a while. I don't like the idea of you wandering around out here half-asleep. Why don't you... [ another sigh. ] Why don't you come in...?
[ and so, Lupin opens the door, revealing himself to be wearing... this, basically, and making an expression like he's bracing for impact. feel free to inspect his great abs if you can get past the amazingly shiny golden vinyl jacket. ]
Just -- forget that you saw this.
no subject
In all honesty, Minato can barely process what Lupin's wearing; he steps in when Lupin tells him to, blinks blankly, and then again, head tilting to one side as if trying to like...
Process what's going on here.
At least he's not laughing...? He mostly looks puzzled.]
... Is this your punishment...?
no subject
Apparently. No matter what I put on, it turns into something ridiculous... You've certainly got it worse, though, so I probably shouldn't complain.
no subject
Still...he's contemplative.]
I guess they tried to pick out what would bother us the most...?
[Hm...]
You can complain all you want. Your punishment seems really troublesome, Lupin-san.
no subject
[ he admits it, at least. He'd rather be stuck wearing these giant pants than go without sleep for a week (despite the Count's occasional reprimands that he doesn't get enough of it.) As Minato sways, Lupin is quick to put a hand on his shoulder, guiding him to come sit down in the kitchen. ]
Come sit down, at least. You look like you're about to keel over.
no subject
Small favors.]
Mm... I'll be okay, once I can sleep.
[Eventually...]
I won't tell anyone that you looked like this, though.
no subject
Well, thanks for that, [ he says dryly, offering a tired smirk. ] I'd offer you tea or coffee, but I haven't got either here, unfortunately. My conversation will have to do. You haven't been wandering like this every night, have you?
no subject
And... he also looks a little sheepish at that.]
Not at first. [At first he was trying damn hard to sleep.] But I started to feel like I was going...a little crazy, lying in bed but not being able to fall asleep for hours.
So I thought a walk might help.
[Spoilers: It Has Not Helped.]
no subject
[ he is also a frequent partaker in The Midnight Stroll, but he's usually not about to fall onto his face or wander into the woods by accident or what have you. ]
Why don't you stay here for tonight? I can't promise I'll stay awake the whole time, but... Hm. How about this? I can tell you more about what I got up to back home. I promised you before.
no subject
It feels less lonely this way.]
... If you don't mind, then... I'd really like that. I don't want you to try to stay awake all night, but...
[Even just for a little while is a load off of Minato's mind right now.]
... I'd really like to hear any of your stories.
no subject
Then I'll borrow your ear for a little while. [ let's see... he's had lots of adventures, of course, but Sib hasn't actually read any of the Lupin novels, so he decides to go with his most recent one. Ones, really. ] As you know, I was born and raised on the streets of Paris, but I made my London debut recently. I crossed the channel with a specific target in mind: a very special jewel.
[ he smiles, because he knows it's cliche - but he likes that part of it, too. ]
It wasn't famous, or stolen, or even something particularly valuable on the black market - it was much more serious than that. Supposedly, this jewel was going to be stolen by a shady terrorist group that was somehow going to use it to create a weapon that would put all of Europe in danger. And I thought, "Arsène, that's your cue!" So I met up with Impey, the two of us drew up a plan, and we set off to Wales to go steal this gem right from under their noses. He had his own automobile with him... I'm still surprised we actually made it there in that piece of junk.
no subject
How can he do anything but enjoy it? It definitely distracts him from his exhaustion, something he's also very grateful for.
A special jewel that wasn't famous or stolen...? More serious than that?
A gem that could make a weapon?]
So you stole this gem from...a group of terrorists? [Isn't that really, really dangerous?]
no subject
[ he wasn't particularly worried about it, even at the time... he was more worried about Impey's "invention" not working properly. ]
I let them take the gem and load it into their carriage. You see, that way, I knew exactly where it was, and could deal with them when I wanted to. When they were coming back, I used a simple trick to draw their attention and their gunfire to me - then Impey set off a remote explosive that flooded their whole contingent with smoke. After that, it was supposed to be as simple as sneaking into that carriage in the confusion and stealing the gem. It was quite a shock when I came in the back door and found a beautiful girl there instead of a gem.
[1/2]
Minato doesn't actually know what he means by "the Queen's own"; it takes context clues before he figures out that Lupin probably (???) means soldiers... huh.
So Lupin stole a gem from some soldiers. That seems legit--
...]
It was a girl--
[2/2]
what?]
... huh?
[A GIRL...??]

[ a proud nod. ]
She'd been there in that house for as long as she could remember - which wasn't very long, as a matter of fact. She couldn't remember anything before two years ago. She was totally clueless about the outside world, and she was petrified of hurting anyone with that poison. We took her in, of course. Been working together since then!
[ a pause; Lupin's expression softens. ]
... She thinks of herself as a monster, but she's probably the gentlest, most genuine girl I've ever met. In exchange for her cooperation, I promised her I'd find a way to heal that poison of hers, but at this point, I think I'm focused on that almost more than stopping that terrorist plot. Heh heh.

More than anything--more than daring tales of a thief with a good heart, or anything like that--this really impresses upon Minato just how much of a hero's heart Lupin really has.
He may be a thief... but he might be one of the best people here, in terms of doing what he can altruistically for other people. It makes Minato smile to himself a little, even as tired as he is; it makes him sincerely happy to know someone like this.]
... How's it been for her? Getting to meet new people, and live life properly like that... does it make her happy?
no subject
I'd like to think it does. I can't say how she's feeling, myself - only she could give you the real answer. But she's been learning to express her emotions more, and she certainly smiles more than she did then.
[ every time she smiles at him, Lupin's heart nearly stops dead in his chest, so he's been keeping good track of that. His affection for her is apparent in the way he talks about her - his voice gentle, his gaze somewhat distant, no doubt imagining what she's doing now. ]
That said, she was going through a rough patch when I got here. I hope she's doing all right without me.
no subject
It's the first step, right?
(But of course Lupin's worried. He cares about her a lot.)]
I think she'll be okay. It sounds like... you set her up for success, Lupin-san. If she's able to really start to feel things and embrace her own emotions, then... she's definitely just going to get even stronger as a person.
