[ Oh. ]

What reason do I have to be mad after what I've just told you?

... [ Well, that's fair. So she doesn't actually answer that, instead pondering-- ]

Um. What were you doing here?

I came to look for this.

[ He holds up the bottle. ]

Boiled white vinegar is useful for polishing armor and other things.

...? Were you polishing armor?

[ Well, if nothing else, she's learned something new. ]

. . . No. Not today. This is for something else.

Something else?

[ She says this very, very tentatively. You know. Just in case. ]

[ There's a beat before he moves in her direction, because he does have to leave at some point. It would look pitiful to avoid answering, so he gives her a curt reply. ]

A ring.

[ She'll at least move aside to let him pass, head tilted inquisitively. ]

Do you have to wash the ring in vinegar to polish it...?

[ Something like that. He stops once he’s at Kisa’s side to give her a sideways glance. ]

Does this interest you?

U-um, a little... I don't have any rings, but it sounds like something important to know if I ever do.

[ He hums shortly. ]

Come, then. Follow me and I'll show you how it is done.

O-oh... okay!!

[ Well, if he says it's fine, then Kisa will eagerly trot after him. ]

[ It's fine, because Kisa hasn't done anything to earn his ire. Renne can go, though.

He takes her to his assigned house in Ruga, where his armored horse greets them with a perfunctory snort outside. They don't go inside (Renne might be there). Berkut has all that he needs to get started—the bottle of white vinegar, a bucket of water, and some cloth—so he sits them down by the steps and, with some hesitation, procures an engraved ring that's too small to actually be his. ]

This is all we will need. You may watch and learn from there.

[ Kisa nods, blinking with more than a little intrigue at the ring (is that for someone else then, she wonders) as she settles down beside him and maintains a close eye on what he's doing.

He'll find she's very silently attentive, at least. ]

[ It's a simple and self-explanatory process (if time-consuming for how long he spends on it), so Berkut plays the part of the silent teacher. After warming the white vinegar, he takes a cloth to the ring and cleans diligently. The water follows on another damp cloth to scrub off the solution, and he doesn't miss a single detail. He's evidently done this many a time in the past. ]

... How often... do you have to polish it?

[ He's clearly an expert, but she hasn't seen him wearing any rings. ]

That varies. I do it once a month. It would be more frequent if the ring were to be worn every day.

[ But, as Kisa has observed, he doesn't wear any. He just carries the one around. ]

... Does it belong to someone else, then?

It was my mother's.

Oh...

[ was? That could... mean a lot. Maybe his mother had given it to him. Or maybe his mother had passed, but Kisa can't bring herself to ask which it is. Her eyebrows faintly knit together in sympathy, though. ]

... It's really beautiful.

[ He turns the dry ring around in his hand, checking for any spots he might have missed. Inwardly, he agrees—this ring had sat beautifully around his mother's finger. He pockets it, then rises to a stand. ]

No member of nobility should settle for anything less.

Do you have questions?

[ About the process. Don't ask about his mother. ]

No... but if I ever have a ring... will you help me make sure I do it right?

[ She followed along very carefully, but it'd be good to have someone who actually knows what they're doing breathing over her shoulder like a perfectionist.

... Not that Kisa thinks she'll have a ring anytime soon, but still. ]

[ With the minuscule cant of his head, he looks at Kisa. He wasn't expecting to be asked that—wasn't watching enough?—but it's not a bad question. ]
