[She'd do it too!]
Don't worry, if that sphinx tries anything, it'll be eating out of a straw tomorrow!
no subject
Since it's directed at the sphinx, he won't complain, but will still mentally file it away to reference at some future time when he might consider doing something Kaoru wouldn't like.]
OK, I trust you to be able to fight it if things go wrong.
If we ever even find it!
no subject
Are you still worried about that? I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we stumble across some kind of animal track or some other clue!
no subject
[So looking for lion paw prints. As if that's something anyone has ever run towards rather than away from.]
no subject
[She'll take his word on it!] So we're looking for lion paw prints or signs of a big cat using a tree as a scratching post?
no subject
[Will they find a giant magical litter box?
He thinks they have a better chance of finding a paw print, until a gash in a tree trunk catches his eye. Four deep lines, just like claws might make.]
I-is that it?
no subject
[Those are some...pretty large claws. She's not very worried about it though.]
Probably. [She's floating closer to take a better look and, hm. Yes. It might be a lion like thing that did this. She turned and, aha. There are tracks in the dirt nearby too!]
Come on, I think it went this way!
no subject
They really are too good at finding things together.
But the Sphinx is just sitting calmly by some trees, not even paying attention to them yet. Maybe there really is no reason to worry.]
What now? Do we just walk up and ask for a riddle?
no subject
[She moves closer.]
Hey, Sphinx! Give us your hardest riddle!
I just searched for riddles online, so hopefully this one is okay?
[Keigo whisper-shouts his concern.
The sphinx merely sits up straighter and turns to consider them - in Keigo's mind judging them - before reciting its riddle:]
Three men are interested in marrying a young heiress, and her father sets up a challenge for the suitors. They must choose between three chests, each made of gold, silver, or lead. One of the three has a photo of the young woman inside it, and only the suitor who chooses that chest may marry her. Each chest comes with a clue.
The sign on the gold chest says, "Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire."
The sign on the silver chest says, "Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves."
The sign on the lead chest says, "Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath."
Which chest should they choose to marry the heiress?
It's perfect!
[Obviously. It can't be because she thinks it's funny.
She's already decided to let him take this one, but she's still listening.]
...that sounds like a really stupid way to decide who to marry.
no subject
[Although he might take his chances on a plan like this over convincing a girl to marry him.]
OK, the gold is right out. It's so obvious it has to be wrong because there's always a trick! Besides, this is her dad setting it up. No one wants to think about his daughter being the thing a bunch of men desire!
What do you think?
no subject
You're the brains of the operation this time, so I'll trust you.
no subject
[Don't ask him how he knows.]
Then there's the dad thing, and no one is going to be good enough for his daughter. None of them deserve her.
So that just leaves the lead one! You have to be willing to give the girl everything to be good enough to be her husband!
[He takes a deep breath to call out his answer to the sphinx but then stops.]
You tell the sphinx.
[Just in case he's wrong. She's the protector in this situation.]
no subject
Did you learn that through first hand experience? [But she will anyway.
She...does hesitate a moment. The last time she got a riddle wrong she went blind???
But she smiles easily because she does trust him.]
Okay. But if I go blind I'm telling on you to Shiho.
[It's fine. Shiho would probably forgive him?]
Sphinx! The answer is the lead one!
no subject
Shiho is never going to forgive him. She'll find a way to put something worse than bees-
Wait.]
Going blind was an option?
[That's not something bringing along a fighter can protect you against!
But it's too late now. Kaoru is giving their final answer.
The sphinx blinks and then speaks:]
Correct. I should have given you a harder one.
[It goes back to ignoring them.
Keigo waits for something else to happen, but it's just sitting there, the only motion when it takes a moment to consider one of its paws.]
Do we- Do we just leave?
no subject
That's what happened when I messed up the riddle the old woman in the woods gave me.
[She pumps her fist with a cheer when they got it right. Then she grabbed his arm with a grin.]
That wasn't too bad, right? And we could stay if you wanted to see if it'll give us another riddle.
[She's kidding.]
no subject
[Having too much pride and being over-confident are definitely things that bring people down in fairy tales. No thank you! He is quite happy not to be blind now.]
That really worked, didn't it? We really did it!
no subject
We did! Our track record for completing quests is pretty good, isn't it?
[...and somehow during both she managed to scare him. It's like a pattern.]
no subject
[She just probably shouldn't ask him to go for anything more dangerous than a sphinx. He might not make it through the scaring him portion of the proceedings if there was a deadlier creature involved.]

Well, if you ever change your mind you know where to find me.
