o toi, le plus savant et le plus beau des anges
WHO: Akira, Dextera, Ryo (+ Pyra in the second thread)
WHERE: The woods
WHEN: 3/14ish
WHAT: Satan, a Devilman, and God walk into the forest to kill a guardian.
WARNINGS: Character death, violence; I'll update this if anything else comes up.
[ Link had cautioned him against harming the guardian, and while Ryo agreed that he had a point since the forest is sentient to some degree and that killing it could very well incur the forest's wrath, he decided to ignore the suggestion to leave it alone—he wants that thing dead, and he wants to know what it might be guarding. One must sometimes take risks in the pursuit of knowledge, after all.
A few weeks after learning about Dextera being in possession of a bullet capable of killing even even a god, Ryo, Dextera, and Akira decide to make the trip into the forest with the intention of tracking down and killing the creature.
It's been a couple of hours since they left town. Their surroundings are growing darker, the trees becoming more twisted and gnarly as they venture deeper. It can't be far now, and Ryo feels unease knot in his stomach—it's as though they're being ushered toward the creature, with nothing hindering their way. They haven't even seen a single animal since they left town. ]
I hope we're not being led into some sort of trap. [ He says, eyes scanning for movements between the trees, fingers tightening around his rifle. ]

the rifle hangs heavy on his back. ]
I don’t think the forest would lead us this far not to take us there, but…
[ what they’ll find when the forest decides they’ve walked far enough is another matter. it’s never been good. ]
no subject
As they walk, he keeps stealing glances at Dextera. He can sense something's bothering him, but he doesn't want to distract him further by asking what, when they have other things to focus on. The further they reach into the forest, Akira begins to lead the way up front, since he needs to be ready to take the brunt of an ambush if there is one. Still...]
If this was a trap, why would it take so long?
[The forest has had plenty of chances to mess with them already, why not just get it over and done with?]
no subject
I should take your shirt, Akira.
[ Can't have him ruin his clothes when he transforms; this isn't back home where he can have Jenny buy new ones. ]
no subject
it would rend his shirt, dextera supposes. instead of commenting on that directly, however— ]
We’re probably near the “end”… whatever that means for us.
[ if they run into the guardian after all, or something worse for trying. ]
no subject
Yet Dextera is right. Soon, they come across a familiar clearing, and he stops, tense.]
I recognise this-- it must be close. You two stay back, and I'll go in first.
[If the guardian thinks Akira is alone until it's too late, all the better. He begins to transform, fur growing from his skin, fangs replacing teeth, wings sprouting from his back. He's towering over them as he finishes the transformation, growling,] Ready?
no subject
Yeah. [ He nods, his hand moving to flick off the safety catch on the rifle. ] Remember to avoid the claws; the poison acts quickly once it's in your system.
no subject
Be careful. I don’t think I can purify the monster’s poison.
[ he hasn’t tried, but the forest has safeguards against this kind of thing. for guren, too. ]
no subject
[Akira steps out into the clearing, alert for any sudden movements. Suddenly there's rustling through the trees, and he ducks aside just in time to avoid a whip-like appendage. It misses, and buries itself into a tree behind him.
Darting forward, he ploughs into the monster, pouncing on it to try and pin it long enough for Dextera to get a shot. He won't bother trying to claw or bite at it when he knows it'll be impervious; he just has to subdue it.]
no subject
He motions for Dextera to stay close, moving to stand out of sight behind one of the nearby trees while waiting for an opening. ]
no subject
he lowers it and moves to ryo’s side. the creature already knows they’re all here, surely, so he doesn’t need to worry about speaking too loudly, but his voice is naturally quiet. a warning. ]
I’m sorry. I need to get closer.
no subject
Suddenly he's struck with a more creative idea than brute force. He lets go of the monster just long enough to grab two of its appendages instead, wrapping them around the tree until it's effectively tied in place by its own arms. If it wants to escape, it risks damaging or breaking them altogether.]
Dextera, now--! [Akira's cut off as one of the remaining appendages shoots forward, piercing him through the chest. Another plunges through his stomach and twists its way in, trapping him in place. The two are at a stalemate.]
no subject
He winces when he sees the appendage plunge its way through Akira's stomach, and he hopes that the sun pendant will do its job at keeping him safe from mortal harm. He glances at Dextera, then back to Akira; they're closer now, but can he make the shot without hitting Akira? ]
no subject
[ dextera looks to ryo in a wide-eyed panic. like an electric current, the purification will shoot through the guardian, but as long as it’s buried into akira’s abdomen like that, akira will feel the brunt of it as well. the sun pendant may be able to do its job once, but dextera can’t make himself responsible for killing someone twice over.
the metal of the rifle rattles in his straining arms. ]

The Gang Raises The Dead
When Pyra sees them leave the forest, the most obvious thing (besides Akira's absence) is that they both seem to have taken a beating, with a dried patch of blood staining Ryo's usually so pristine coat. ]
Hurry up, Dextera.
[ He notices Pyra in the corner of his eye, but he doesn't as much as glance in her direction. ]
no subject
…
[ he doesn’t apologize, merely keeps his eyes low—thus missing pyra—and picking up his pace. ]
no subject
Ah--
[ She's going to be going up to them, concern and worry written upon her expression. Pyra brings a hand up to her mouth when she's close enough to really see the state they are in, unable to hold back a soft gasp. ] You two, how are you... What happened? You look terrible...
[ Her voice drops then, and her brow furrows. ] And... what happened to Akira? He had went into the forest with you.
no subject
We tracked down that creature. The guardian. [ He's assuming she's read his forum post from last month and doesn't bother clarifying. ]
Akira didn't make it.
[ It's said after a second of silence, as if his tongue is trapped behind his teeth and he cannot bring himself to say those words out loud. His normally calm voice has a definite edge to it, agitation and stress seeping through that he makes no effort to hide—it's been a long day, and he is too exhausted. ]
no subject
[ it’s true, but that complicates a number of things. dextera would rather lie and spare her feelings than share a painful truth, but he doesn’t know who she is. being a homebody has its drawbacks.
he looks between his friend and pyra, a frown pulling at the corners of his mouth. when he speaks again, he’s addressing the new arrival. ]
It’s…
[ of course, he doesn’t have much else to say. ]
He’ll be back soon.
no subject
The words shatter what hope she had at seeing the both of them, breaking the fragile belief that maybe, just maybe Akira had be separated from them for some other reason.
Pyra eyes widen, brow raising in both confusion and shock. ] What... do you mean... [ She begins to say, approaching them, looking between Dextera and Ryo with abject concern. ] "He didn't make it"... "He'll be back soon"--
[ He died, that's what they're saying. So her next question is: ] How? [ ....What sort of creature could have felled Akira of all people? She's not sure about Dextera, but Ryo... Ryo she knows to hold quite the significant relationship to Akira (from what she's gathered in his heart, at least); if anyone would know about his abilities and how incredibly powerful he is, it could be him. Pyra's eyes train on him. ] Is he... you the both of you leave him there?
no subject
Hm. They can lessen the energy drain by having more people assist in using it, so... maybe Pyra could make herself useful. ]
We have an item that will bring him back right away.
no subject
Ryo.
[ a little urgent, a little worried. he’d rather take it all on himself than let someone else get involved. ]
no subject
At the mention of an item that will bring him back, however, she brings up a hand to her chest, her fingers curling around the crystal. ]
---What is it?
[ The urgency in her voice matches Dextera's as well. Ryo doesn't even have to ask her:] Is there-- is there anything I can do to help?
no subject
[ He explains, completely ignoring Dextera saying his name. He knows how ominous that book is, but it's better to split the necessary energy between three people instead of two, especially when they're both tired and injured from the fight.
(Maybe a part of him is looking out for Dextera too, wanting to lessen the side effects for both himself and Dextera.) ] ....You could assist us in reviving him.
no subject
[ this time, he wants to make himself known, because they’re both ignoring him. pyra is merely doing it out of concern for someone, which is respectable, but ryo shouldn’t drag another person into this. he doubts that akira would want it either, but if pyra has come this far in offering herself—would she really turn back?
so he looks at her. ]
It’s dangerous. We don’t… really know what it’ll do to us.
[ it’ll drain them, but the side effects could be endless. ]
no subject
I want to help. [ Her voice is soft, pleading as she regards the two men. ] Akira... He was someone important to me, too. Please let me help.
